I recorded the music (it’s him playing and singing a song that he wrote) on Christmas night, then made the video the next day with some timelapse shots that I had shot when I was in Portland visiting him a while back and never done anything with. I have been trying (admittedly not at all hard) to figure out how to change this damn home screen on my blog. It’s been two years since I’ve been on a pair of Rossignols, and still I have this same picture of me skiing on them because the back end of this website is so damn convoluted that I can’t even figure out where to start. I thought I could, but I was wrong. I followed all the steps that seemed to make sense, but someone, the someone in particular that build this silly ass site made it extremely difficult for the HTML rookie that is me to figure out. Any ideas? I really want to make it worth the time of everyone that comes across this thing and actually goes through the effort to click into the front door, but I’m having some trouble. I was also having trouble with the fact that motivation has been lacking, and time was even more so. All of these things are changing. I’m still not sure why I even have a blog in the first place… I guess so I can talk about cool stuff. Here goes: I have been doing some cool stuff in life. Kinda cool anyways. In the past six months I have built over 400 pairs of skis, I’ve learned how to weld, I rebuilt an old motorcycle that I bought for $300 and it’s now a fully functional reliable machine, I joined a band and we’ve played a bunch of shows around Salt Lake and Park City and started writing some collective songs that aren’t half bad, and I’ve stared working on some pretty cool ideas and projects that might have the potential to be worth something someday… Now all I have to do is learn how to blog for real. I’ve always had a hard time with it because I feel that it’s a massively narcissistic thing to sit down and write about myself ambiguously to the internet on the assumption that someone out there cares and wants to know all about me. I am going to try something though. I am going to try to talk about the cool things that happen in life for their own sake, not because it’s about me, but because it’s a cool story, one that someone might want to read, and at least then I can remove myself from the context enough to want to write it. Hell, at the very least it will give my brain a little practice using words properly again.

I just went out and bought me a new computer. This is on the tail of not owning one for six months or so after mine was stolen last spring. That said I plan to be more productive in the media realm, with the goal of putting out some edits for myself, and with the 4Frnt crew.

Hey there world, sorry for the long long pause between things that i have said, but I suppose you’re used to it by now.. I have a legitish reason for it this time though; my computer was stolen from my house, and on that computer were all of my passwords for everything. While I changed almost all of them, I couldn’t remember what this one was until right now when I just happened upon it! Now I’ve got it though, and you can bet that i’ll be writing more often. Granted it’s summer and so probably no one cares, but in any case here I am…

This summer so far I have been developing a couple of new skis, as well as getting everything ready for this summer’s build of the new Renegades. Anyone that has known me for a little bit is thinking exactly what I am: “are you serious?? you’re doing that again??” Yeah, I know, it could be a bad idea. It could be ridden with all of the same problems as it was last summer. It’s possible, I know. I am trying to prove to myself and everyone else though that I have actually learned something from my experiences, and that I can make this time around go much more smoothly, having all of the skis done and out the door before the first sign of snow. In the mean time I have been making a point to learn a lot of new things, and work on new projects to keep my mind moving forward, not just concentrating on one little thing and thinking I’ll learn something..

Rambling.

Anyways. I’ll write something good and real and even add some pictures in a couple days.

May: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in the U.S. More than 1 million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer each year. Here are some facts to help you stay safe and spread awareness:

- One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

- One in three Caucasians will have skin cancer.

- The sun’s UVA rays are considered cancer causing. UVB rays may also contribute to skin cancer. That being said, the SPF rating on your sunscreen only indicates protection level from UVB rays alone. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin.

- One blistering sunburn episode as a child more than doubles your chances of developing skin cancer later in life.

- UVA and UVB rays change the skin’s texture over time causing wrinkling, age spots and premature aging.

- The good news is skin damage is largely preventable with a daily suncare program based on broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection.

What to look for in a Sunscreen:

SPF rating of 30: an SPF rating of 60 is NOT double 30. It only offers 1% more protection. Using the correct amount and reapplying often is more effective protection than a higher SPF rating.

Natural sunscreens rarely go above SPF 30, due to the lack of spreadability (think toothpaste). If you refuse to put in on, it can’t protect you.

It takes more active ingredient to increase SPF level, if you are using a non-mineral sunscreen this means more concentrated chemicals. Again, a healthier and more effective mode of protection is to use an SPF 30 and reapply.

True Broad Spectrum Protection. Means protection from both UVA and UVB rays. If your sunscreen does not have either Avobenzone or Zinc Oxide it is not offering protection from the full range of UVA rays.

Healthy Inactive ingredients:

Up to 80% of a sunscreens formula can be made up of inactive ingredients.

With few exceptions, most health hazard issues in personal care products, including sunscreens, are derived from inactive ingredients. Look for Paraben Free, Petroleum Free, Fragrance Free.

I have been home from traveling for about two weeks now, and have decided without reserve that I would rather, any day, be moving than stagnant. Not that this is an original sentiment by any stretch, but it leads to another interesting idea; how do you remain moving while staying in the same place? It is a bit of a strange question, because it is so easy not to answer. It is so damn easy to go about life in such a manner that could only be properly described as surviving, but not living exactly.. For a while I fell victim to the concept that I could somehow be happy while not adamantly pursuing any of the things that make me feel that way. Pretty fucking dumb looking at it now, but it is an easy dichotomy to fall into. Especially when on paper everything looks right. In any case, being on the road reminded me that directions only change while in motion, and thinking you should be happy is not the same as feeling happy. So that said, since being home I have had to make some changes in my life, changes that require a complete shift in mental capacity, motivation, and priority. The first and most important of these changes is something that should be obvious, but just like everything else sometimes falls victim to the force of habit, and is very simple; I have made a direct effort to say ‘yes.’

“Hey Cody, do you want to go for a tour tomorrow?”

“yes!”

Simple, right? Well, I guess it is. But like I said, force of habit.

The second is to remember, as I said before, that change doesn’t happen without forward motion first, and that only very very rarely has anyone sat down with nothing in particular in mind and all of a sudden out of the blue had an incredible moment of inspiration. More likely is that motion comes first. That all things were invented first with the intention to fix something, and the invention came with the natural creative momentum that the process breeds. So that’s where this whole idea started. Maintaining motion while staying still. For the moment I’m home, but I would hardly say stagnant. I’ve been making a point to remember what I’ve said for many years: only boring people get bored. There is always something that I could be doing, there is always something I could be learning, there is always somewhere to go, and a better way to get there that still needs to be invented. I don’t know the answers, but I think it’s pretty damn important to remember that they’re all out there waiting patiently to be found, and that everything in the world is pretty interesting if you pay attention.
